The essential make-up of snowboarding gear is the bindings, boots and board itself. The most suitable snowboarding boots for novices are those that come with quality inserts and offer enough flexibility for additional comfort and stability. Experienced snowboarders forego comfort and stability for mobility and opt for firm boots with strong bindings.
When it comes to selecting the right snowboards the possibilities are endless. First-timers usually go with short boards; medium length boards excel in all kinds of terrain; and long boards are ideal for lengthy runs since they are the fastest and most stable. Choosing from so many different styles of boards can be overwhelming to novices unfamiliar with the various brand names and manufacturers. The advice of an experienced snowboarder is invaluable when board shopping.
Snowboard gear can be modified to match the owner’s style and personality. Boots, bindings and even the board itself can be fitted or adjusted for better performance and stability. Snowboarding gear is unwieldy and bulky, as many snowboarders who travel frequently will already know. When travelling by plane, for example, it is impossible to stash a board in the overhead bins. All snowboarding gear has to be carried as additional luggage at the passenger’s expense.
Snowboard equipment manufacturers will sometimes stoop to heavy advertising campaigns to increase market-awareness of their products. Some manufacturers zero-in on a target audience and inundate them with ads to convince them to buy a particular board. While high quality gear will always be in demand in the marketplace, certain boards are popular with segments of the snowboarding community solely for their logo or ad-campaign.
Shops selling snowboarding gear will stock boards from several different manufacturers. Contrary to popular belief, not all snowboarding equipment is expensive; many shops stock cheaper high-quality gear that lacks the name recognition of the most expensive brands. The main things buyers have to look for when shopping for snowboarding equipment is quality of the materials, their durability and how they perform in the field.
Buying one’s gear at the resort is not recommended. Resorts stock the most expensive items at their stores, often marked up even higher. A better option would be to buy all the necessary gear before heading out to the field and only picking up missing odds and ends from the resort store.
